Perk's Anniversary

by Perk's Pollinators on November 13, 2012

Can it be that a year has passed since launching our beloved Perk's Pollinators? It has certainly been a busy and rewarding time. Our inspirational bee colonies have enjoyed a gorgeous spring and summer. Thanks to their industry and dedication, we've had bumper crops of plums, pears, pineapple guavas, pomegranates, quince, persimmons and the Meyer lemons are just beginning to ripen! Most of the colonies made plenty of honey, gathered sufficient pollen and are now hunkered down for the winter. We won't disturb them until late winter when they will begin to expand their brood nest once again. Until then, we beekeepers will clean and sanitize equipment, melt beeswax, and prepare for the busy spring season.

All of this bodes well for Perk's products – fresh, beautiful beeswax ready to establish the rich foundation for our body balms! Some of you may have noticed that Perk's has added a few new products to our ever-developing line:

  • Bee a Rose Face Cream

  • Baby Bee's Balm

Check out our website: to see more detailed descriptions of each of these products.

In addition, we have some brand new offerings and just in time for your holiday gift-giving! However, I must give a heartfelt thanks to so many of our devoted family members, friends and customers who have been generous with their feedback and encouragement. These new products would not have been possible without your trials and valuable input.

New pictures and product descriptions will be up and running on the website very soon. Until then, here is a preview of our newest “Bee-inspired Body Balms”:

  • Coconut with Citrus Body Butter – creamy and delectable in a beautiful glass jar

  • Coconut with Lavender Body Butter – soothing and relaxing

  • Rosemary Grapefruit Cook's Balm – all of our Cook's balms rolled into one extra special product!

  • Lavender Flower Salt Scrub – a lovely variation of our Lavender Rose Salt Scrub!

  • Creamy Almond Body Oil – for massage or very dry skin that needs extra pampering. My swimming friends and I love this blend.

Last but not least, is our newest venture - “Bee-inspired Bites”! Thanks to encouragement from our friends at the Made Local Marketplace, our granola hit MLM's shelves this past summer. Sweetened with the perfect blend of honey and maple syrup, gluten-free oats, flax seed, lots of nuts and shaved coconut combine for a healthy and crunchy breakfast or snack.

  • Coconut Granola – organic and gluten free!

  • Coconut Granola with Shaved Dark Chocolate – organic, gluten free, decadent and delicious!

When ordering for the holidays, please write a note specifying when you'd like to receive your order. In this way, we can insure that you have the freshest possible products for your holiday gifts.

Our warmest holiday wishes to you and yours,

As we venture into the New Year, I am enthused to see Perk's Pollinators growing and branching out into our Petaluma community and beyond! Like a child who we nurture and always give our very best, a new business is ever-changing, growing and responding to your feedback, which I so appreciate. Below are listed some very special merchants who are now carrying Perk's Pollinators Hand and Foot Balms, Cook's Balms and Salt Scrub! In addition to Perk's Products, you'll find garden tools, heirloom seeds, locally made products and artists, exceptional skin care, amazing wine and olive oil, even expert swim instruction! Please visit these wonderful merchants and give them your business.

I owe a very special thanks to my son, Ben, who designed our beautiful Perk's Pollinator bee that you'll now see on our business cards, literature and labels. Thanks for all of your precious time and energy, Ben!

We are so pleased to introduce our newest products! Thanks to Kathleen at Alkhemy Skin Care in Petaluma, we've created a Lavender Hand Balm. We still make our Cocoa and Lavender Balm for those of you that love the smell and feel of cocoa butter. But for those of you that love lavender all by itself, this balm, enriched with shea butter, coconut oil and lavender essential oil is special. Be sure to give it a try!

Inspiration arrives from all directions! Three former teaching colleagues and expectant mothers, are the inspiration behind our Mama's Belly Balm and Baby Bee Balm. Mama's Belly Balm will nurture and soothe the ever accommodating pregnant belly. Beneficial beeswax combined with butters, coconut oil and gentle essential oils will comfort your skin and soul. Then when that beautiful baby arrives, Baby Bee Balm will deliver protective beeswax and herbal infused oils to your baby's delicate skin. This balm is gentle, healing and can be safely applied to your baby's diaper area for added protection. We never use petroleum-based ingredients!

Finally, some of our hand balms have improved with the addition of African Shea Butter. You'll now see shea butter added to Perk's Garden Hand Balm, Cocoa and Lavender Hand Balm and Lavender Hand Balm and will notice a creamier, richer feel to these balms. Be sure to check out these new and improved bee-inspired body balms!

Warmest Wishes

My deepest thanks to so many of you that have given me great feedback and supported Perk's launching. I appreciate it more than I can adequately express!

As we move into the winter months and the holiday season, the bees are hunkering down. They've reduced their population, raised the hardy winter bees, and are intent upon clustering in order to keep the queen and one another warm during the cold months. Did you know that they will keep their nest at a toasty 93 degrees? You can imagine how important their honey stores become - helping them to create the warmth needed to survive the winter!

In the meantime, we beekeepers are cleaning the hive boxes that will not be used until spring. This is the perfect time to gather the golden beeswax used in Perk's products - fresh and rich with nutrients. Many folks that I met at the holiday fair this past weekend in St. Helena, wondered if our balms contain honey or pollen. Here at Perk's, we use only minimally filtered beeswax. You can rest assured that our balms contain all of the beneficial ingredients that the bees intended - pollen, honey and propolis.

A bit of background: Beeswax is a nutrient-rich substance produced by bees in order to make honeycomb. In our products, we use it to help soften skin and create a long-lasting protective coating against the elements. It is also a naturally nourishing moisturizer that kills germs as it heals and soothes the skin. Beeswax obtains its golden color from the propolis, honey and bee pollen inside. These materials are produced by bees and they are known for their incredible health benefits. The beeswax helps lock in the skin’s own moisture, nourishing skin cells and creating a barrier against the destruction caused by the environment. Propolis kills germs and helps heal the skin. Beeswax is a pure, natural wax that human beings have been using for hundreds of years. It is also edible and has been used to coat foods and medicines.

With that in mind, we are so excited to introduce our brand new Cook's Balm! Here I have my friend, Lennie, to thank! Check out her website and her absolutely delicious culinary sea salts (and throw that table salt away!) :  You'll find our Cook's Balm to be delicately fragranced with Grapefruit essential oil and perfectly safe to keep on your hands while cooking! You will not find petroleum based or artificial ingredients here. As with all of Perk's products, all that you apply to your skin is safe enough to eat!

Lastly, our Salt Scrub has had a makeover! With the addition of rose petals and a larger, food grade plastic container, our new and lovely Lavender Rose Salt Scrub is another perfect gift for your friends and family this holiday.

Wishing you all a warm and peaceful holiday,

We are so enthusiastic about launching our products during this beautiful fall season. Just as our bee colonies are busy preparing for the winter ahead, here at Perk's Pollinators, we are doing the same! During the cold months, honeybees are expert at conserving their energy yet keeping their queen and brood nest warm enough to survive. Most of us do the same - staying indoors, picking up inside projects that we put aside in the spring. The combination of indoor heat and the cool outdoor temperatures can wreak havoc on our skin. In addition, the necessity of frequent hand washing in order to avoid viral illness can send our skin over the edge! Prior to using our balms, I suffered from dry, cracked and often painful hands in the winter months. We know you'll be glad to discover that Bee Drops will stay on your hands even through a few hand washings!

We are proud of our natural, organic and locally sourced ingredients. Imagine skin care products that are actually safe enough to eat! I will sometimes discover that our cat, Blackberry, has been nibbling at the hand balm that I keep by the kitchen sink! She must need some extra oil in her diet. :)

With that in mind, we are currently developing a Cook's Balm! A hand product that you can keep on your hands while safely cooking. We'll keep you posted on that one.

We look forward to working for you and your precious skin - just like those awesome honeybees!
